Bees from the Nowiny cement plant featured in the Echo dnia newspaper
The editors of the Echo dnia daily newspaper became interested in the ecological project completed the Nowiny cement plant in cooperation with the League for Nature Protection. It is about the “Bees in the City” initiative under which beehives and bees appeared at the plant’s premises. This idea is aimed at developing and promoting urban beekeeping in our region.
Considering the problem of a drop in honey bee population in Poland and Europe, an apiary comprised of four beehives was set up in the cement plant.
This action will help to increase the population of this insect species by creating a friendly environment for its life and development. We will protect the bees by giving them a new home at the cement plant and thus contributing to the development of this extremely useful insect species,’ says Zuzanna Graur, manager for sustainable development and decarbonisation.
The Echo dnia journalist also asked about the oxytree plantation which is the second ecological project at Dyckerhoff Polska Sp. z o.o. Oxytrees were planted at the green areas around the plant and along the raw material road used to transport the raw material from the Kowala mine to the Nowiny cement plant. ‘Apart from oxygen production, they will also serve as a natural sound-absorbing barrier, which will increase the comfort of living for the nearby residents,’ added Paweł Mróz, environmental protection specialist.
‘Our task is to achieve harmony within the scope of completion of economic, social and environmental protection goals. We treat sustainable development as our social obligation, and a factor in the long-term success of the company,’ sums up Magdalena Fudala, spokesperson of Dyckerhoff Polska.
